Why Persuading is better than Selling.
|
A lot of people ask me, Sam why do you use the word persuasion? Why do you emphasize so much that persuasion is so important? The answer is simply this, you think about it, there have been times in your life when someone has tried to really sell you something, all they did was emphasize the selling of a particular product to you, maybe it was a product.
Often you hear that second hand car sales people have a really bad sales reputation and the reason for this is they are trying to sell people on something rather than persuade them into it. The difference is that by selling something you are basically just emphasizing what you, as the person selling is going to get out of it. You are not giving the person a choice to choose to improve their life.
It’s like “hurry up, buy this car and give me your money”, as opposed to someone who’s persuading where they show the other person why it is a good idea for them and why it’s not just in the seller’s interest, that it’s also in the buyer’s best interest to move ahead and buy the product.
You are actually creating what is called ‘buy-in on the idea’. So whether the idea be selling a physical product or selling your idea, what you want to be doing is persuading people not just selling.
All of us have had experiences in our lives and come across really pushy sales people and we all know how we felt. Think about it, nobody likes it. Yet we have all also come across people who we have spoken to and have just felt ‘wow, this person has my best interest at heart, they actually care about me, they are actually looking out for me and those are the people that you buy your products from.
The second type of person we feel is more like our friend than a sales person. Rightly or wrongly we believe that they have our best interests at heart and are their to help us rather than just sell us.
So, be a persuader not a seller.
